KNEC responded amidst pressure over the credibility of KCPE results released recently.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has refuted claims that the Kenya Certificate of Secondary (KCSE) exam results were set for release. 

In a statement dated Friday, December 8, KNEC termed the reports as fake and misleading to candidates and parents.

KNEC maintained that the marking exercise was still ongoing contrary to reports shared on various social media platforms.

"KNEC has made no such statement. Marking of KCSE is ongoing and the results will be released when they are ready," KNEC wrote on X formerly known as Twitter.

The Ministry of Education led by Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu is also yet to reveal the exams release date.

Some 903,260 candidates sat for the KCSE exams this year which started on October 23 with practical papers.

KNEC dispelled the reports of early release amid pressure from parents and other stakeholders over the credibility of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results.

The council received criticisms from a section of Kenyans accusing them of rushing the marking and releasing of the results without conducting proper audit.

However, Knec CEO David Njengere in a report presented to the National Assembly Committee on Education on Wednesday, December 6, said the processing of the 2023 KCPE exam was longer compared to other years since 2016.

"The processing of 2023 KCPE examination results took the longest number of days in the last eight-year period," the Knec boss said.

Machogu on the other hand attributed the irregularities to the SMS platform hitch where he promised to develop a new system that would be less costly.

“As the ministry, everything was right, an outsider who was given the contract did not conform and do to the required standards, moving forward when we release the KCSE examination, it means we will not be able to use the service provider,” said Machogu.

“I am already engaging ICT we see whether we can be able to develop a website that members of the public can be able to access free of charge. When we release our KCSE anytime soon,” the CS reiterated.
