How Man Wanted For Murder of Girlfriend and Leaving Body at US Airport Was Traced at Nairobi Club

Kevin Kangethe, the man wanted for the brutal murder of Maggie Mbitu, who was found dead in a car at Logan Airport in the US last year, has been captured in Nairobi. 

The fugitive was arrested while partying at an entertainment joint in the Nairobi Westland area.

Acting on a tip-off, detectives raided the club and apprehended the 40-year-old accused of murdering his girlfriend in the US.

An informant who posed as a reveller at the club positively identified Kangethe and ratted at him leading to a night arrest led by Kenyan detectives.   

The suspect was positively identified forensically by US officials from the Nairobi Embassy and the extradition process was initiated immediately. 

Kangethe is wanted in the US after Mbitu, 31, of Whitman, was found stabbed to death in a car at a Logan Airport garage on November 2. She had been reported missing by her family three days earlier. 

Investigators later revealed that Kangethe left Boston on a flight to Kenya after killing her. Mbitu was a nurse who worked in group homes helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 

Following his arrest, the US thanked Kenya indicating that it was committed to working with the country to tackle all forms of crime. 

"Embassy Nairobi commends the efforts of Kenyan law enforcement for apprehending Kenyan fugitive Kevin Kangethe, suspected to have murdered Margaret Mbitu in Massachusetts sometime between October 30 and November 4, 2023," the US Embassy in Nairobi Stated.

"United States law enforcement, the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions have been working side by side to locate and capture the fugitive. The United States and Kenya are committed to strengthening law enforcement cooperation to apprehend criminal offenders, eliminate criminal activities, and advance justice." 

Mbitu's family also thanked the authorities indicating that justice will finally be served.

"The long hand of the law is finally catching up with Maggie's murder suspect. We have confirmed with law enforcement and the DA of the arrest of Mr. Kangethe in Kenya and are waiting on the next step of extradition and eventual prosecution," they said in a statement. 

"We want to thank our friends, law enforcement here in the US and in Kenya and the community at large for the efforts in the capture of Mr. Kangethe. We are confident that the truth will prevail and that justice for Maggie will be achieved."
