The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has written to President William Ruto. 

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) on Friday, February 2 wrote to President William Ruto over the warring state of affairs in the country.

In the letter, the religious leaders pleaded with President Ruto to listen to the cries of Kenyans saying the level of stress and mental anguish has risen to unmanageable levels, and if the situation is not resolved, the damage will be unredeemable.

“We urge you to reach out to the people of Kenya and have a dialogue with them. Just as you went across the country explaining your vision and convincing Kenyans to vote for you, now engage them to reach agreement on how the vision is to be actualized. The hustlers and Mama Mbogas who believed the vision you shared are willing to walk the journey with you, do not isolate yourself from them,” read the letter in part.

NCCK called on President Ruto to lead his administration in in adhering to the Constitution and Laws of Kenya. The council noted that the recent attacks towards the Judiciary will result in loss of confidence in the institutions of governance.

The church leaders called on the Head of State to the Legislature be free to hold the Executive accountable as is provided for in the Constitution.

At the same time, NCCK asked Ruto to address the high cost of living in the country. The religious leaders pointed out that the soaring cost of commodities coupled with dwindling expendable income, has pushed more Kenyans below the poverty line.

“To remedy this situation, we strongly recommend that you provide a reprieve for the people by lowering taxes and freezing the increment of statutory deductions for health and retirement insurance. Instead, we urge for measures to promote growth of export-oriented businesses,” NCCK stated.

The council also urged the President to audit the national debt noting that there are concerns on the amount of loan funds received in the country and how the money was used.

The religious leaders further asked the President to establish a National Economic and Social Council to advise on the current economic impasse.

Additionally, the church leaders called on Ruto to safeguard Kenyans' sovereignty and future and the future of learners.
