There was drama along the Vihiga-Kisumu road on Wednesday, after a family blocked the major road protesting over a decision by Vihiga County Referral Hospital morgue, not to preserve the body of their kin because it was Madaraka Day holiday.

The family had sought to have their keen’s body admitted at the morgue, but the attendants turned them away citing Madaraka Day holiday.

Irked by the decision, the family took the body and placed it in the middle of the road, causing great challenge to road users.

“This is my mother who is lying here, we brought her to the hospital yesterday, and she passed on, but they have refused to talk to us and are closing the gate when they see us,” one of the family members told a local publication.

The incident caused a traffic snarl-up as motorists struggled to navigate through the road that was full of curious onlookers.

The police were alerted of the incident and move to the scene. On arrival at the scene, police were forced to lob teargas canister in the air to disperse the crowd that had gathered there.

By press time, the hospital management was yet to issue a statement on the bizarre instead.

Reports indicate that there has been a standoff between the hospital management and staff. A meeting has reportedly been held today with the aim of addressing the standoff.
