The Kamiti Maximum Prison 'Call Center' expose was produced by Citizen TV's Lulu Hassan.

The government has issued a statement regarding the Kamiti Maximum Prison 'Call Center' expose that was aired by Citizen TV.

In a press statement on Wednesday by the Kenya Prisons Service, the government said that the clip was recorded back in 2019.

The government further stated that David Tett, a former prisoner who was referred to as the mastermind in the expose, had been transferred from Kamiti Maximum Prison on July 22, 2021.

In the statement signed by Commissioner General of Prisons Brig. (Rtd) John Warioba, the government said that serious measures had been undertaken at the facility for the safety of inmates, officers and the public.

"Kamiti Maximum Security Prison has undertaken serious measures to enhance the security and safety of the inmates, officers and members of the public. The Kamiti of today is different from the one that was portrayed in the story of April 18, 2022," he stated.

Brig. (Rtd) Warioba said that even though the prison service appreciated the media for educating and informing the public on what was going on in prisons, correct facts should be presented.

He said that if a story was recorded in the past, it should be indicated so. The Prisons boss assured the public that his service was committed to ensuring correctional facilities lived up to their purpose of reforming offenders.

The statement comes after Citizen TV's Lulu Hassan revealed in the expose how prisoners conned innocent Kenyans through fraudulent calls. The story attracted a lot of reactions from Kenyans.
