Two police officers have lost their lives while three others are nursing injuries.

Two police officers on Friday, February 24 lost their lives after their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Daadab, Garissa County.

Three other police officers who were in the vehicle are nursing injuries following the attack.

According to Garissa County police commander Thomas Ngweiywa, the officers were coming from Daadab to Garissa town when they ran over the explosive.

The attack comes barely two weeks after three officers were killed in Alango-Arba area in Garissa after their vehicle ran over an IED.

A similar attack happened in the area on January 11 where four Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) workers were killed after their pick-up overran an IED at Hailey, in Bura East constituency.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki earlier this month stated that his ministry had intensified the fight against terrorism.

“We have disrupted many terror plots at source, neutralised and/or arrested dozens of suspected terrorists, and destroyed a huge cache of weapons and explosives that could have badly harmed our people if they were not intercepted.

“The current crackdown on al-shabaab terror cells in Somalia which is spearheaded by local community leaders with the support of the Federal Government of Somalia has tremendously weakened this militant group,” Kindiki stated while giving his update on the country’s security in the past 100 days.
