Molo MP Kimani Kuria on Wednesday proposed the revision of the Housing Fund and digital tax.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition has stated that the proposed Finance Bill 2023 is still flawed despite the proposals to amend some of its sections.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, June 14, ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya said that no amendments can redeem the controversial bill.

“After going through the document, our position remains that the budget proposal is flawed beyond redemption. No amount of amendments can redeem this bill.

“There are things that are deeply passionate and unrelenting about. We believe Kenyans have been hurt for a prolonged period of time and the budget proposal prolongs and worsens the suffering of the people,” said Oparanya.

National Assembly Committee on Planning and Finance on Wednesday proposed the revision of the digital tax from 15 percent to a figure of 3 percent.

This, according to the chair of the committee Kimani Kuria, is to enable digital content creators to grow their platforms.

"We propose a reduction in the housing fund contribution from 3% to 1.5% to avoid discrimination against those who are earning less," said Kuria.

The committee also proposed the remodeling of the Housing Fund from 3 percent to 1.5 percent.

“We propose a reduction in the Housing Fund contribution from 3 percent employer and 3 percent employee to 1.5 percent employee contribution and 1.5 employer contribution,” Kuria added.

The Molo MP also noted that the committee proposed the capping of the Housing Fund at Ksh 2500 to be removed since it was discriminating against people who are earning less money.
