Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago will spend the night in custody after being arrested by detectives over the Finland scholarship scandal. 

The Senator was arrested on Wednesday, August 16 alongside two County officials Joshua Lelei and Mishack Rono over the scam, where parents lost over Sh800 million.  

Earlier, the trio had failed to appear in court to face charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, abuse of office among other charges, prompting a warrant of arrest to be issued for their immediate arrest.

Detectives from the Financial Investigations Unit launched a manhunt for the three before the suspects opted to surrender when they ran out of ideas.

The three are being held at Nakuru Central police station pending arraignment in court on Thursday morning.

Before the arrest, Senator Mandago had claimed that they had reached an agreement with parents from Uasin Gishu County on the way forward. 

"There are rumours all over Eldoret Town that DCI Officers have been looking for me the whole night. As a law-abiding citizen, I am available once summoned. I have met with the leadership of parents and agreed on the way forward as per their press statement issued last evening," he said in a tweet.

At the same time, President William Ruto fired a warning shot at those who embezzled money contributed to pursue education in Finland and Canada.  

"Kuna wazazi walitoa pesa na pesa yao haijulikani iko wapi. Kama kuna mtu alikula hiyo pesa, ajipange kulipa mapema ama ataingia mashakani. Hakuna maneno ya kubembelezana kwa pesa ya mtu yenye aliuza ng'ombe ama shamba. Lazima arudishiwe pesa yake," President Ruto stated
