  • MCAs move to impeach governor Governor Cyprian Awiti.

Homa Bay Members of County Assembly have initiated the impeachment of Governor Cyprian Awiti.

The Ward Representatives accused governor Awiti of abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.

Last year MCAs accused Governor Awiti of fuelling wrangles among them to weaken the legislative and watchdog role of the assembly.

A section of Homa Bay MCAs threatened to elect a parallel House leadership claiming that the governor was to blame for the disputes.

This comes barely a week after Mohamed Abdi was impeached as Wajir Governor by Senate following a similar move initiated by the MCAs.

Wajir MCAs accused Mr Abdi of ignoring the agreement they had with him when they dropped the first motion of impeachment they had filed against him.

The Ward Representatives accused Mr Abdi of failing to provide quarterly expenditure reports to the county assembly as required by the Public Finance Management Act.

Additionally, MCAs said the Abdi's administration failed to release over kSh70 million intended for operations of the county assembly.

In 2020, governor Abdi faced impeachment after MCAs accused him of corruption, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

Last week the Senate voted to uphold the impeachment of Wajir Governor Mohammed Abdi. 25 Senators voted in favour of the impeachment motion, 2 voted against and 4 abstained.
