Gathegi grew up in the United States playing basketball until a knee injury ended his career.

He developed an interest in acting and proceeded to enroll in acting classes to kickstart his newfound career path.

According to the Hollywood star, his first official big break was a film project where he met with a movie director, and since then he has appeared in major movies like The Twilight Saga.

Gathegi has hoisted the Kenyan flag high alongside other prominent Kenyans such as Lupita Nyongo-daughter to the Governor of Kisumu, Professor Anyang' Nyong'o.

In the movie, he co-stars alongside the bigwigs of the Hollywood industry- Idris Elba and Regina King.

On being featured, Gathegi pointed out that he was elated to be part of all-black casts, demystifying the notion that cowboys are only white.

During an interview regarding his character in the film, he pointed out that he usually digs into the role to understand its associated history.

"Well, I knew about my character, but I didn't know that my character actually died by getting kicked in the head by a horse, which is a pretty tragic way to go," Gathegi narrated.
